The UK is facing a shortage of antibiotics amid an outbreak of streptococcal infections. This is reported by the British edition of the Daily Mail.

According to the publication, there has been an increase in the number of cases of infection with streptococcal (group A) infection in the country, from which seven children have already died. At the same time, three antibiotics that are used in the treatment of patients with this disease were in short supply.

The Daily Mail notes that the British authorities assure that there are enough medications in the country. However, the head of the British Association of Independent Pharmacies, Leila Hannbeck, argues otherwise. According to her, pharmacies do not have enough necessary antibiotics, so pharmacists have to explain to parents that they cannot buy medicines for their sick children.

In particular, UK pharmacies lack one antibiotic from the penicillin group, amoxicillin for children and clarithromycin, an alternative antibiotic for people allergic to penicillin. According to the Daily Mail, the shortage of these antibiotics will persist until the end of the month.
